In the early 1800s, many pirates sailed the coastline of Murrells Inlet, including the legendary Blackbeard aboard his famous boat, Queen Anne’s Revenge. The pirates hid their ships in the inlet creeks, waiting to ambush and raid England-bound ships carrying goods and gold.
Murrells Inlet History:
Murrells Inlet is also rich in history, with Native Americans, the Spanish, the English, pirates, World War II airmen and the Civil War all having played a part in Murrells Inlet’s past. The Civil War reached Murrels Inlet in 1863 when Union warships attacked confederate blockade runners who used the inlet as a port for exchanging goods such as cotton with England in return for materials.
