This 240-acre park is the Recreation District’s jewel in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was developed by the SC Commission of Forestry and the SC Department of Parks, Recreation, & Tourism in the 1940’s to promote tourism in the Upstate. The park was originally established for the African American community while neighboring Paris Mountain State Park was built for the white community. During the 1960’s both parks became integrated and in 1985 the state decided that other parks were capturing most of the tourism traffic and offered Pleasant Ridge to the Greenville County Recreation District. The park has since been a favorite get-away, for local residents. Just 40 minutes from downtown Greenville, the park offers rental cabins, picnic shelters, a 25-site campground and a four-acre fishing lake. There is also a one-mile hiking trail that passes by small waterfalls, an old moonshine still site and the remains of a grist mill. Pleasant Ridge will also be the new home to Pleasant Ridge Camp and Retreat Center which will house Camp Spearhead, a 40-year-old residential program for individuals of all ages with special needs.
