Nazareth Presbyterian Church

Established in 1765 and organized in 1772, this is one of the state’s most historic churches and home to one of the oldest cemeteries in upstate South Carolina. Revolutionary War soldiers and those of every other war are among the hundreds buried here. Nazareth is called “the mother of churches” because over 10 churches have been formed from the membership of the congregation. Bricks for the present church were hand-made near the Middle Tyger River and sun-dried on the hillside nearby.
