Cheraw State Park manages longleaf pine habitat for federally endangered red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW) colonies. This program is part of the National Public Lands Day volunteer event. Several known colonies exist, but we will survey potential RCW habitats looking for unknown cavity trees. We will meet at the Cheraw State Park Mountain Bike Trail parking lot on Auction Barn Road. Wear sturdy hiking boots and long pants, and bring a backpack with water, snacks, and a lunch. Sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended. Bring binoculars if you have some.
