Bored of the same old 5K run? I’ve got just the event to spark things up.

The YMCA Harborside Lights 5K and Kids Fun Run, taking place Friday, Dec. 13, in Columbia’s Lake Carolina, is anything but ordinary. Rather than start at dawn like most 5K runs, it takes place after dark.

Participants will be given glow necklaces and bracelets to wear during the race, creating a shooting star effect as they run and walk along the streets of the Lake Carolina community decorated with tens of thousands of twinkling holiday lights and more than 1,200 luminaries. It’s like the Fourth of July in December!

A one-mile fun run for kids 12 and younger will kick things off at 6 p.m., followed by the main event at 6:30.

But wait! There’s more. The festivities also will include live music, horse-drawn carriage rides, hay rides, photos with Santa and holiday treats.

Packet pick-up will start at 4 p.m. Your bag of goodies will include a T-shirt, the glow-in-the-dark accoutrements and all the race information you’ll need. To be guaranteed a T-shirt, you need to register by Nov. 27.

Cost to participate is $25 if you register before Nov. 27, $30 for registrations postmarked between Nov. 28-Dec. 12, and $35 on race day. The kids’ fun run fee is $10. Click here for a registration form. To register online, click here
