Need an excuse for a Lowcountry getaway? Sign up for LoCo Motion, a three-day, 30-mile breast cancer walk/run taking place Sept. 26-29 on Hilton Head and Callawassie islands.

If you’re going to walk 30 miles in a weekend, it might as well be in a beautiful venue. And it’s for a great cause. All proceeds from the event support breast cancer education, screening, treatment and clinical research.

Recruit your favorite friends for a girls’ weekend or organize a family reunion at the beach. You’ll have plenty of time to catch up with your fellow walkers during the 10-mile-a-day jaunts.

To get you ready for the three days of long distance walking or running, event organizers have put together six-, eight- and 12-week training programs designed to build up your stamina. You’ll find them on the event website at www.DotheLoCoMotion.org.

“You want to start off slowly so your body can adjust to the physical activity,” said Hollie Smith, an exercise physiologist at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, lead sponsor of the event. “If you build up your strength and endurance over time, your heart doesn’t have to work as hard.”

Along with the training schedules, the website features a video with nutrition and training tips from exercise physiologists and nutritionists at Beaufort Memorial’s LifeFit Wellness Center.

LoCo Motion’s long weekend of festivities begins Sept. 26 with a kickoff party at Skull Creek Boathouse on Hilton Head Island. The first 1,000 registrants to RSVP get in free.

The trekking part of the weekend will start the following day at the Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort. The 10-mile course meanders through the community of Palmetto Dunes and the Coligny and South Forest Beach neighborhoods before hitting Hilton Head’s wide, hard-packed beach for the last two miles.

On day two, the pack of pink will move to Callawassie Island, the first community in South Carolina to be designated a Community Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. Then it’s back to Hilton Head Island on day three for an all-beach route.

Each leg of the three-day event will be followed by post-race parties with food, drinks and live music.

Participants have the option of running or walking one, two or three of the event days. Those who complete all 30 miles will be awarded a commemorative medal.
