The Buckhorn Lodge Gets a Facelift

Posted 6/21/2012 5:57:00 PM
Camp Buckhorn and the Buckhorn Lodge hold a dear place in the hearts of many of Paris Mountain State Park’s visitors. For generations this rustic dining and meeting hall-style lodge has served as the central location for countless family reunions and group camping trips for youngsters.

As with many things, years of love and use by park guests began to take their toll on the structure, originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, and so the lodge warranted a much-needed restoration.

The structure was originally constructed with materials found in the park such as logs and stone—“parkitecture” as the park service affectionately refers to it—and had only undergone one renovation in the 1970s. Thanks to the Friends of Paris Mountain group, more than half of the $300,000 needed to restore the facility was raised via donations. The project was extensive but incredibly budget-efficient, as only park staff was responsible for the labor and local supplies and wood were used as much as possible.

The Buckhorn Lodge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which requires the original building plans to be used in the restoration. Buckhorn’s rustic origins are preserved in the new structure, but the lodge also boasts several new features including an outdoor patio and fully-equipped catering kitchen (sounds like a wedding to me!).

June 4 marked the official re-opening of Camp Buckhorn and the lodge, and rentals for weddings, camping trips, reunions and meetings may be placed year round again.

A full-day reservation fee is $1,000 on M-F and $1,500 on the weekends with a minimum two-day rental. All rentals include access to the kitchen, bathroom and patio with grill, as well as chairs and tables in the dining hall. Adjacent to the lodge are nine cabins, furnished only with bunkbeds, which may also be rented.
