Color Me Rad comes to Columbia

Bored of the same old 5K races? Sign up for Color Me Rad Columbia, an outside-the-lines kind of competition guaranteed to brighten your day — or at least your body.

Whether you run like the wind or plod along like a penguin, you’re sure to pass the finish line with flying colors. And I’m not just being nice.

In this colorful competition, racers start out clean as a canvas and are quickly turned into abstract works of art as they are blitzed with blue, green, pink, purple and yellow color bombs.

Each section of the run adds a new explosion of color until you’re covered from head to toe like a splattered palate of paint. Not to worry. The color bombs are nothing more than ordinary cornstarch and the kind of dye approved for use in foods, cosmetics and drugs. They’re non-toxic and non-rash inducing.

Color Me Rad Columbia takes place Sept. 28 at the Colonial Life Arena. The blitzkrieg begins at 8 a.m. with waves of runners getting bombed with color every few minutes. The route will take runners through downtown Columbia, up University Hill and around the State House.

The registration fee is $40 through Sept. 14. After that, it’s $45.

Those of you who are givers, not takers, can volunteer for bombing duties. To join the Color Bomb Squad, you must be at least 16 years old.
