Free golf: Cheraw State Park course offers one-day-only gift to players

Posted 7/23/2012 5:29:00 PM

A day of golf at Cheraw State Park’s championship course has a lot going for it: a delightful, tree-lined Tom Jackson layout; an easy drive from Columbia (90-plus minutes) as well as Myrtle Beach and the Charlotte region; great conditioning; and a charming, laid-back clubhouse and atmosphere.

How could it get any better? How about … free?

As part of a special summer promotion, any foursome playing Cheraw State Park this Saturday (July 28) will do so absolutely free. If you’re calculating savings, that’s $140 ($35 per player) you can invest in something else … golf balls, hats, shirts or just stick it in your wallet.

Reservations for each foursome (no singles) must be made in advance to receive the free offer.

Besides golf, the state park will offer activities all day Saturday including club demos, discounts in the pro shop (making your $140/$35 go even further) and specials in the clubhouse grill.

Cheraw State Park is a great deal even when paying full price. The course is carved out of a sand hills long-leaf pine forest and gives players a wonderful feeling of isolation with no two fairways adjacent. Golf Digest named the 6,928-yard, par-72 course one of its “Super Values.”

The park also has earned awards for high standards of natural resource management, specifically its turf grass. Park officials also strive to maintain the pine forest ecosystem, home to the endangered Red-cockaded woodpecker, and have earned certification from Audubon International as a wildlife sanctuary.

To make reservations for Saturday’s free round – only 60 spots are available between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis – call (800) 868-9630. For information on Cheraw State Park, go to
