For the (former) troops: Myrtle Beach hosts National Retired Military Golf Classic

South Carolina has a long, proud tradition of supporting the U.S. military in wartime and in peace – not to mention being the home to a number of military facilities (Fort Jackson, Shaw Air Force Base and McIntire National Air Guard Base, to name a few). And for 30 years, Myrtle Beach has played host to one of the nation’s top annual military golf outings.

Make that 31, when the National Retired Military Golf Classic returns to the Grand Strand for five days, May 27-31, 2014. The event features four days of golf and $110,000 in cash and prizes for entrants (the event is open to retired military, spouses and corporate sponsors), and is a much-anticipated event for long-time participants.

Hosting the team competitions for men and women will be Myrtle Beach National’s South Creek and West courses, Myrtlewood’s Pine Hills layout and Pine Lakes, aka “The Granddaddy” (the oldest course on the Grand Strand). Cost of the tournament is $295 for men, $250 for women, and includes carts, awards, prizes and gifts (logo shirts, hats or visors, towels and entertainment vouchers). The fields are limited to 872 men and 128 women, and entry deadline is Jan. 15, 2014.

Accommodations are available at special rates at the Bay Watch Resort, Anderson Ocean Club and Spa, Atlantic Breeze Ocean Resort, Best Western Plus Carolinian Oceanfront Inn & Suites, and the Patricia Grand Resort. Call (866) 469-7853 for rates upon confirmation of acceptance into the tournament.

Players will be assigned to teams based on handicap index and compete in a captain’s choice format. Registration and an “icebreaker” party at Bay Watch Resort are May 27, with play beginning at 7:30 a.m. each of the following four days.
