Healthy Learners: October tournament raises funds to help children

Posted 8/28/2013 5:00:00 PM

Healthy Learners, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, will host its 14th annual Champions for Children Golf Tournament – this year in memory of the late George Younginer – on Oct. 16 at Columbia’s Fort Jackson Golf Club.

The charity is “devoted to removing children’s health barriers to learning with love and compassion,” according to information provided by the group, and the tournament is again sponsored by Colonial Life. Proceeds “enable us to help hundreds of children across South Carolina by providing them with health care services (such as) vision care, dental care and hearing evaluations,” says Jo Pauling-Jones, Healthy Learners executive director.

Play begins with a shotgun start at noon. Playing hosts for the tournament are WIS-TV (Channel 10 in Columbia) news anchor Judi Gatson and Rick Henry, the station’s sports director in his 25th year with the NBC affiliate.

Also on hand will be co-chairpersons Dawn Staley, women’s basketball coach at the University of South Carolina, and Michael A. Younginer of Younginer LLC Engineered Products.
