The expression “Know Your Score” is meaningful to any golfer, but it’s even more crucial to know PSA (prostate-specific antigens) when it comes to early detection and/or treatment of prostate cancer. What more fitting cause, then, to be beneficiary of a celebrity golf tournament?
The Know Your Score Golf Benefit
, set for Aug. 23-24 at the Grande Dunes Resort Course
, is in its sixth year in Myrtle Beach
but its first visit to Grande Dunes. A stellar lineup of sports celebrities will be matched up with entrants for Saturday’s golf tournament, and a gala reception with dinner and entertainment will be held Friday night at nearby Marina Inn at Grande Dunes.
The tournament is part of the Zero Prostate Cancer Golf
series, which stages such events across the country to raise money for research and also raise awareness of testing for prostate cancer. The charity name comes from its goal: zero prostate cancer deaths, cases and, for those suffering from the illness, eventual zero PSA test results.
Locally, title sponsors for the third straight year are Atlantic Urology Clinics and Carolina Regional Cancer Center.
The lineup of celebrity playing partners includes such names as former NBA standouts Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Artis Gilmore, Sam Jones, Gus Williams, Charles Oakley and Lenny Wilkins; ex-NFL stars Thurman Thomas, Harry Carson (of S.C. State), Richard Dent, Ed “Too Tall” Jones and former South Carolina Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers; former boxer Gerry Cooney; and baseball’s Joe Morgan.
“Many of the athletes (have) a very personal connection to the cause: some of them have fought prostate cancer themselves (or) have had someone close to them affected by it,” according to a release from tournament officials.
Entry fee for the golf tournament is $2,500 per foursome including a table for eight at Friday’s gala; golf and tables for four are $2,000. Non-golfers can secure a gala table for $1,500.
