In July 2012, the Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association (CGCSA) was seeking a way to encourage more players to play more golf at a time when play nationally was flat, while also helping fund turfgrass research programs at Clemson University and North Carolina State University.
In a brilliant stroke, the association and its executive director Tim Kreger decided to use on issue to help solve the other, and Rounds4Research
The CGCSA solicited member clubs in the two Carolinas to donate rounds of golf and stay-and-play packages, which would then be auctioned online, with profits going to the turfgrass programs at the two schools. It worked so well that the CGCSA’s parent organization, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, decided to get in on the act and go national.
Which brings us to 2013 and two online auction periods. The first just ended, and the second runs Aug. 1-11 in coordination with the PGA Championship.
Courses participating in Rounds4Research are listed on the website by state, along with bid start figures for each course and/or package. A total of 100 superintendents’ chapters will take part, offering up play at courses across the nation – though, not surprisingly given the CGCSA’s origination of the program, South Carolina will have more courses – 124 – offering packages than any other state.
Included in the courses up for auction are many private clubs, such as Camden Country Club, Columbia Country Club, Belfair (Bluffton), Callawassie Island (Okatie) and four of The Cliffs courses near Greenville. To view S.C. courses participating, click here

Last year’s inaugural Rounds4Research initiative, over a six-month period, sold more than 185 rounds of golf and raised more than $28,000 for research. This year, with a track record and a full year to run the program, those numbers are expected to soar.
The auctions are supervised by the Environmental Institute for Golf (EIFG), the philanthropic arm of the GCSAA. All sales are final and no refunds will be offered; payment via Visa, Discover, MasterCard and American Express. A portion of winning bid amounts may be tax deductible; consult a tax advisor for more information.
