Know the rules: Carolinas Golf Association offers free seminars in March

Players who take their golf seriously are almost always sticklers for following the game’s rules. But even the PGA Tour’s top players don’t always know the proper application for the game’s regulations, as proven almost each week when players are penalized or disqualified for unknowing infractions.

Weekend players in South Carolina who want to ensure they follow the rules – and sometimes catch their buddies/opponents in a violation – will be able to brush up their knowledge in March when the Carolinas Golf Association offers six USGA Golf Rules Seminars in the state.

This is the 37th year the CGA has offered the sessions, which last between 90 minutes and two hours, and are free and open to golfers of all ages and abilities. Attendees view a narrated computer presentation on the basics of the Rules of Golf, followed by question-and-answer sessions, and they also receive a free copy of the 2012-15 Rules of Golf handbook as well as information about the CGA.

The schedule (all sessions are 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m.):

March 4, Moss Creek Golf Club, Hilton Head Island; March 6, Wild Dunes Golf Resort, Isle of Palms, March 7, Prestwick Country Club, Myrtle Beach; March 12, Woodside Plantation Country Club, Aiken; March 13, The Woodlands Country Club, Columbia; and March 14, Country Club of Spartanburg.

Golfers planning to attend a seminar should register online to assure themselves a place. For more information, call (910) 673-1000 or e-mail questions to
