Head to Columbia for some of the country’s best barbecue

South Carolina’s “Mustard Belt” is one of the 19 best regions of the country to get barbecue, according to the folks at Food & Wine.

All four of the basic types of barbecue are available in South Carolina, and that’s a claim no other state can make. But the mustard sauce barbecue is the most unique, and it’s sometimes referred to as South Carolina-style barbecue because that’s the only place you’ll find it. It’s the barbecue of choice around Columbia and stretching to the coast around Charleston.

We can thank the German settlers who arrived in South Carolina in the 1700s, bringing mustard along with them, for this mouth-watering barbecue.

Food & Wine specifically mentions Little Pits BBQ in Columbia and Shealy’s BBQ in Batesburg.
