A cupcake tower built in Myrtle Beach has earned the sweet title of Tallest Tower of Cupcakes from Guinness World Records.

About 7,860 cupcakes were used for the tower, which was 20 feet 5 inches and weighed about 3,500 pounds. It took 54 volunteers about two hours to place the cupcakes on the wooden tower.

The stars of the TLC show “DC Cupcakes,” Katherine Kallinis Berman and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne of Georgetown Cupcakes, baked the cupcakes in their Washington, D.C., bakery and delivered them to Myrtle Beach.

The cupcake tower was built July 20 as part of a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the city of Myrtle Beach and the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. The city was incorporated in 1938, and the chamber was founded the same year.

Palmetto Event Productions coordinated the building of the tower and the event, which featured beach music bands, including The Original Drifters, The Catalinas and Dennis Edward’s Temptations Review.

About 5,000 people attended to see the tower and to greet Berman and LaMontagne, and then, afterward, to eat the cupcakes.
