Defending champ claims hot dog eating title

How many hot dogs could you eat in 12 minutes?

Michael Diebold ate 18, but it wasn’t pretty.

Diebold, of Anderson, won the Skin’s hot dog eating contest at the South Carolina Festival of Discovery in Greenwood Saturday for the second year in a row. Last year, he managed to stuff down 22 in 12 minutes, just three off the contest record of 25.

Ten contestants started the competition, but two were disqualified.

“You cannot get sick,” said Charlie Barrineau, Greenwood city manager who served as emcee of the eating contest. “If you get sick, you are disqualified.”

That almost happened to Diebold, too, but he managed to stuff it all back in, if you get the picture. As I said, it wasn’t pretty.

Jay Esposito of Greenwood came in second by getting down 17 dogs. Bryan Crocker, also of Greenwood, won third by eating 13.

Diebold was the only contestant not from Greenwood, where the festival ran from Thursday through Saturday.

At least the competitors had good hot dogs to eat. The first Skin’s opened in Anderson in 1946 and now have 12 locations, all in South Carolina.
