When I saw the latest issue of Southern Living
magazine included a story on the South’s best fried chicken, I was not surprised to see Martha Lou’s Kitchen
on the list. No one who’s eaten that fried chicken should be surprised.
At this little pink spot on Morrison Drive in Charleston
, Martha Lou Gadsden has been turning out incredible fried chicken – and lots of other great foods – for 30 years.
Southern Living says the chicken is a must, along with lima beans and okra stew. That’s the exact meal I had there when I visited
Gadsden’s daughter, Debra Worthy, helps her mother run the business, and she asks what meat you want as soon as you’re seated because they don’t cook it before they get there. It’s cooked when it’s ordered, which means that delicious fried chicken is served piping hot.
Over the years, Martha Lou’s Kitchen has gotten lots of well-deserved attention from some national publications including Saveur magazine
and the New York Times
. Framed copies of such articles line the restaurant’s walls. Now Gadsden and Worthy can add Southern Living to the collection.
