The folks of the Greater Travelers Rest Chamber of Commerce are throwing their first Chili Cookoff event Saturday, Aug. 18, at Gateway Park, and it’s going to be one heck of a hot festival. More than 25 teams are competing for big money and cooking up a pot of chili for the sampling, so I suggest you pack an appetite!

Meadville Road Bluegrass Band, local favorite singer/songwriter Jacob Johnson and headliner Green Vegas will provide tunes for an event-packed day. See if you can take the heat in the jalapeño pepper eating contest, or if your taste buds aren’t up for the challenge, sign your family up to compete in the watermelon seed spitting or pie eating contests. Try your luck in the cornhole tournament or test your strength at tug of war.

Kids can bounce around in free inflatables and take part in interactive art activities, face painting and games. Food vendors will be on hand serving up southern favorites including barbecue, pimento cheese sandwiches and fried green tomatoes along with hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cakes, ice cream and deep-fried Oreos.

Make plans to visit Travelers Rest this weekend for the family fun event spotlighting local businesses and some great chili. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information visit the event site on Facebook.

Travelers Rest is located in Northern Greenville County, just miles from downtown Greenville at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
