Now’s a great time to visit the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden
because the zoo is celebrating the arrival of four baby animals. A one-month-old Caribbean flamingo has joined the flock and two baby Toucans are now in the Bird Garden
. And the most anticipated arrival of all -- a five-week-old Rockhopper penguin was born on June 14.
The little chick is the first penguin hatchling born at the zoo since 2010, and it will be making its public debut on the Penguin Coast in a couple of months. Know why they are called Rockhoppers? The penguins hop from rock to rock on both feet! The penguins spend a lot of their time in the chilly waters of the exhibit, so until her waterproof feathers come in, she’ll be tucked away safe and warm in an enclosure with her parents.
