Meet Eddie, the tallest boy around

Posted 10/5/2012 6:40:00 PM

Have you met Eddie? He’s a 10-year-old boy with quite a large smile. He is the most famous fourth grader in the state and by far, the tallest boy around. He lives at 211 Gervais Street in Columbia.

Eddie is actually an interactive exhibit at EdVenture Children’s Museum. I met him recently, and he is quite an impressive young man.

Sitting, Eddie is 40 feet tall. If he stood up, he would burst through the roof at more than 100 feet from head to toe. He is as big as a four-story building. He is made of 17.5 tons of molded plastic and was brought into the museum in three parts. His heart alone weighs 500 pounds and is large enough for three adults to crawl inside.

Visitors at EdVenture are able to crawl into Eddie’s brain, walk through his heart, climb up his vertebrae, explore his stomach and the rest of his organs, then slide out his intestines. He’s designed to teach you a thing or two about your own internal workings, and encourage you and your family to take care of your bodies.

Kristy Barnes, EdVenture Children’s Museum’s Communications Manager, says she loves to see kids’ surprised reactions when they walk into the museum and first see Eddie. He is the coolest museum exhibit I personally have ever seen. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) agrees with me. They awarded the museum the 2011 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, one of only 10 awards given to libraries and museums nationwide each year.

The next time you are in the area, pay Eddie a visit. The second Tuesday of the month is family night at EdVenture with $1 admission from 5 to 8 p.m. Regular admission costs $11.50 for children and adults; $10.50 for seniors (age 62+) and military (with ID); Children younger than one are admitted free. Group rates are available.

EdVenture is open Monday - Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
