Visions of Kiawah, a lovely break from the course…

All of the buzz on the South Carolina coast is currently about the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island. I like golf well enough, but sometimes it’s nice to take a little break from following the pros around to do something completely different from what the week has been slated for. Sometimes a little bit of art is a nice change of pace.

The Wells Gallery in downtown Charleston just happens to have a second space at The Sanctuary at Kiawah. Luckily for those of you who have plans to attend the PGA Championship, the Kiawah location is hosting a show honoring the island’s alligators and Spanish moss-draped oaks. Through Aug. 17 Visions of Kiawah will be on view at the storied resort’s premiere gallery. The contemporary works feature the dreamlike sunsets and landscapes that draw visitors to the island year-round. Glen Harrington, Shannon Smith and Rick McClure have created the kind of works that you can just stare at from a rocking chair while your mind lulls to a comfortable murmur.

The painting featured here is by Oklahoma City native Rick McClure, an award-winning painter. McClure travels the country painting and teaching plein air techniques. This piece features Kiawah’s famed Ocean Course in a quiet and summery setting. Be sure to stop by and enjoy!
