Kick off the season with laid-back summer Saturdays at the West Columbia Riverwalk Amphitheater

I spent a lot of time complaining last weekend. Friday started out with children’s trips to the doctor that somehow — and I’m still not sure how — ended up with me getting stitches along with orders to take it easy. The holiday weekend was beautiful and all I wanted to do — since I’m never very good at following directions — was go for a long walk.
By Saturday afternoon my husband had had enough of my whining, so he led me to the car and started driving until we ended up at the West Columbia Riverwalk
. I guess he assumed that if I couldn’t walk around, perhaps I would enjoy watching others partake in the activity in a beautiful setting. Instead, this just fueled jealousy and I continued to grumble as we slowly made our way to a park bench amidst the amblers, joggers, bicyclists, and other annoyingly active people who were enjoying the scenery.
Then, all of a sudden, we heard something. It was a saxophone. Then a voice. And then there was laughter. We were approaching the riverwalk’s amphitheater, where a band was warming up for a laid back, bluesy, benefit concert. For some reason, I had never considered the logical idea that an amphitheater by the river would be the perfect place to host local musical acts as the river rocks and rolls on by just meters away.
It turns out that the West Metro Chamber of Commerce
hosts an entire summer series at the venue called Rhythm On The River. There are three dates left in the series, every Saturday between now and June 15, which will include a jam session with the regulars of the legendary Bill’s Pickin’ Parlor
. The shows begin at 6 p.m., so you can pack a picnic and fill a cooler with your favorite beverages and spend the evening enjoying the amazing view and listening the local music, then end it with a comfortable stroll along one of the Midlands’
most treasured stretches of walkways. What a great way to celebrate laid-back summer Saturdays! The discovery certainly changed my mood this weekend.
